About this figure

Guan Yu — Lord Guan, the Duke of Loyalty and Righteousness — is among the most widely venerated figures in Chinese religious art. He is honoured by temples, businesses and families as a guardian of integrity, courage and promises kept.

This figure is cast in solid brass as an integrated whole, then refined by hand across every plane of the armour. The dragon motifs are worked in relief and picked out in full polychrome, with multi-gem inlay set into the chest plate and shoulder guards. The face is finished separately so that the expression keeps its calm, unwavering character.

Each piece is made to order. Because the painting and inlay are completed by hand, no two figures are identical, and there may be slight variation between sizes. We photograph the actual piece before it is packed and share those images with you for approval.

The craft behind the figure

Work begins with the model. The proportions of the body, the fall of the robe and the angle of the halberd are set first, because a guardian figure must read correctly from every direction it will be viewed.

The accepted model is then cast in brass. After cooling, the surface is filed, chased and burnished — a stage that can take longer than the casting itself, since the armour is built from many overlapping planes that must each catch the light cleanly.

Painting comes last. Colour is laid in successive thin layers, allowing each to cure before the next, so the finish stays deep rather than flat. Gem inlay is set into prepared recesses and secured once the paint has fully cured.
